Format: 3 months
Group Meetings: 2 group sessions per month / 6 sessions total

Focus: Photographic storytelling, sequencing, editing, creative direction, and preparing a finished project

  • PROGRAM GOALS

Over three months, we will move from taking individual photographs to creating a cohesive photographic story.

The coaching will help you develop your ability to:

  1. Identify and communicate a story through photographs

  2. Photograph with greater intention and purpose

  3. Develop a personal visual voice

  4. Create stronger relationships between images

  5. Edit and sequence a body of work

  6. Write about your work and articulate your ideas

  7. Develop a finished project suitable for an article, YouTube video, or art exhibition or book

By the end of the program, you will have a clearly defined project, a cohesive body of photographs, and a plan for presenting or sharing the work.

  • STRUCTURE

MONTH 1 — FINDING THE STORY

Session 1: From Photographing to Storytelling

Focus: What makes a photographic story?

We will explore:

  1. The difference between a good photograph and a meaningful body of work

  2. What makes a story compelling

  3. Subject, theme, emotion, conflict, place, and character

  4. How a photographer's point of view influences a story

  5. Identifying subjects and ideas that you genuinely care about

  6. Looking at your existing photographs to discover recurring themes

Session 2: Image review session/Developing Your Project Idea

Focus: Turning an idea into a photographic project.

We will review your photographs and identify:

  1. Recurring visual themes

  2. Strong subjects and moments

  3. Gaps in the story

  4. Images that feel connected

  5. Images that may be technically good but don't contribute to the story

We will then develop a project concept.

Project Planning

By the end of this session, you will have:

Working title:
A temporary title for the project.

Central idea:
What is the project about?

Story/question:
What are you trying to explore?

Audience:
Who do you want to experience this work?

Final format:
Choose a direction (Photo article / written story, YouTube video / visual essay, art exhibition, photo book or zine)

  • Or another format that fits the project

MONTH 2 — BUILDING THE STORY

Session 3: Photographing With Intention

Focus: Making photographs that serve the story.

We will examine:

  • Establishing shots

  • Portraits and characters

  • Details and close-ups

  • Sense of place

  • Action and moments

  • Quiet or transitional images

  • Light, composition, color, and atmosphere

  • How different types of photographs work together

Rather than asking only, "Is this a good photograph?", we will begin asking:

"What does this photograph contribute to the story?"

Session 4: Image review / Editing & Sequencing

Focus: Turning a collection of photographs into a story.

We will edit your work together and explore:

  • Selecting your strongest photographs

  • Eliminating repetition

  • Identifying the photographs that carry the story

  • Creating rhythm and pacing

  • Beginning, middle, and ending

  • How one photograph changes the meaning of another

  • When to leave information out

  • Creating emotional progression

MONTH 3 — FINISHING & PRESENTING THE PROJECT

Session 5: Finding Your Voice & Preparing the Presentation

Focus: Connecting the photographs to words and presentation.

We will work on how to talk and write about the project without simply explaining every photograph.

Depending on your chosen format, we might develop:

For a Photo Article

  • Headline/title

  • Opening paragraph

  • Photographer's introduction

  • Captions

  • Image sequence

  • Closing section

For a YouTube Video

  • Opening hook

  • Story structure

  • Voice-over or interview material

  • Photograph/video sequence

  • B-roll

  • Ending

  • Thumbnail/title concept

For an Art Exhibition

  • Exhibition title

  • Artist statement

  • Wall text

  • Image selection

  • Print sizes

  • Sequencing and installation

  • How viewers move through the work

Session 6: Final Edit & Next Steps

Focus: Completing the project and creating a path forward.

We will review the finished work as an audience would experience it.

We will look at:

  • Does the project communicate what you intended?

  • Is the story clear without being overly explained?

  • Are the photographs working together?

  • Where does the viewer's attention go?

  • Is anything missing?

  • Is anything unnecessary?

  • Does the ending feel intentional?

  • What would make the project stronger?

Final Outcome

By the end of the six sessions, you will have:

  • A completed photographic story

  • A final or near-final image edit

  • A clear project statement

  • A defined presentation format

  • Experience editing and sequencing a body of work

  • A finished piece that can be submitted, published, exhibited, or developed into a larger project

    * Please note that there is a no-refund policy.
